Biography:
Growing up in Bali and Jakarta but spending his high school years in Yogyakarta, Beringin has been exposed to different cultures since an early age. He was raised in a multicultural, multiethnic and multireligious family with a strong belief that diversity is a strength that should be embraced. His interests in culture and its relations to politics brought him to study political science, where he wrote a final thesis about punk rock music as a form of protest against Thatcher’s policies in England.
After graduating, Beringin further deepened his passion for traveling and experiencing other cultures by doing immersive social research in poor areas across Indonesia, where he lived with people in their homes to learn and understand their daily lives. He then pursued his craft in political communications by joining and leading the 2019 national elections field campaign team of a young legislative candidate from North Kalimantan, one of the most remote and underdeveloped provinces, before joining Kiroyan Partners.
Experience:
Beringin was involved in multiple organizations and committees during his university years at the Political Science Student Association and committees at FISIP UI. He was then tasked by Garuda Indonesia Air Crew’s Union (IKAGI) to assemble an independent third-party team for their general elections and assembly.
He started his career as an associate researcher for Reality Check Approach+ (RCA+), a project under Palladium International that focuses on development and poverty issues, emphasizing human-centered research. By living in with the informants in their own home, with their family, and minimizing the power gap, he gained the opportunity to learn and experience other people’s lives. Beringin was involved in studies on adolescents’ nutrition and physical activities and about children’s perspectives on government social protection programs, both of which have been published.
Prior to joining Kiroyan Partners as a consultant, Beringin moved to North Kalimantan as a full-time legislative candidate’s chief field campaign officer for 8 months. There, he honed his political communication and analysis, project management, and writing skills. This direct involvement in a political process gave him a valuable insight into real politics both at the grassroots and elite levels.
