Jakarta, October 3, 2025 – In response to the rising challenges of social inequality and the growing public demand for more equitable policies, the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at the University of Indonesia (UI) has taken a strategic step by launching the School of Social Sustainability & Innovation (SSSI). Officially inaugurated today, Friday (October 3), this initiative marks FISIP UI’s commitment to addressing the urgent need to highlight the social dimension in Indonesia’s sustainable development agenda.

In his opening remarks at the launch of SSSI, FISIP UI Dean, Prof. Dr. Semiarto Aji Purwanto, stated, “Sustainability discourse has often been dominated by environmental and economic issues. However, the social dimension is equally crucial in ensuring inclusive and fair development. The establishment of SSSI is expected to strengthen the role of academics in integrating social aspects into the sustainability agenda.”

As a strategic partner in the establishment of SSSI, public affairs and strategic communications consultancy firm Kiroyan Partners (KP) brings a wealth of experience in bridging the interests of businesses, society, and government. Their involvement spans from conceptualization to realization of the initiative. Noke Kiroyan, Founder and Chairman of Kiroyan Partners, also emphasized the importance of incorporating the social dimension into sustainability initiatives to ensure both operational success and company reputation.

“In the business world, I have learned that a social license to operate is fundamental for business continuity and reputation. Reputation is not solely defined by economic performance and environmental compliance, but also by how much a company prioritizes social justice, equality, and inclusion. Without this, sustainability remains just a slogan, not a reality,” said Noke Kiroyan.

Carrying the theme “Social Sustainability: Prioritizing People, Bridging the World in Global Goals and Local Actions,” the SSSI launch event, held at the Juwono Sudarsono Auditorium at UI’s Depok campus, invited key figures from government, academia, business, and civil society organizations. Dr. Pungkas Bahjuri Ali, Acting Deputy for Human Development and Culture at the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas, who delivered the keynote address, warmly welcomed and fully supported the launch of SSSI by FISIP UI. The establishment of SSSI aligns with the national development vision that places people and social capital as core pillars.

“We are pleased to welcome the opening of SSSI, as it carries the mission of Indonesia’s future. One of the pillars in the Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) is social development that safeguards and harmonizes social life,” said Dr. Pungkas Bahjuri Ali, Ph.D., a representative from Bappenas, in his speech.

The event was symbolically marked by a gong strike by FISIP UI Dean, followed by a discussion session on the challenges and opportunities in creating a more inclusive, just, and empowered society, featuring leading experts. Moving forward, SSSI will offer both degree and non-degree programs exploring topics such as social license to operate and governance. As an initial step post-launch, FISIP UI will begin with non-degree programs tailored for professionals seeking to deepen their understanding of the social aspects of sustainability without committing to long-term formal education.

With the launch of the School of Social Sustainability & Innovation, FISIP UI, together with Kiroyan Partners, is committed to strengthening Indonesia’s contribution to the sustainable development agenda, while cultivating innovative social solutions relevant to today’s challenges. This initiative is expected to serve as a catalyst for cross-sector collaboration that will translate global goals into tangible local actions, creating a meaningful impact for all layers of Indonesian society.
