Biography
Dr. Muhammad Atho’illah Shohibul Hikam, MA, APU, is an expert in Indonesian politics and government as well as international relations with extensive and diverse education in communications and political science, among other areas.
His published books include Demokrasi dan Civil Society (1996); Politik Kewarganegaraan: Landasan Redemokrasi di Indonesia (1999); Islam, Demokrasi dan Pemberdayaan Civil Society di Indonesia (2000); and Deradikalisasi dan Masyarakat Sipil (Jakarta: Gramedia, forthcoming, 2015). He has also become the editor of books on Indonesia’s strategic issues: Toward 2014-2019: Strengthening Indonesia in a Changing World (2014); Ketahanan Energi Indonesia 2015-2025: Tantangan dan Harapan (2015); Memperkuat Ketahanan Pangan Demi Masa Depan Indonesia 2015-2025 (2015).
Experience
From 1999-2001, Hikam was the State Minister for Research and Technology and served on the House of Representatives (DPR-RI) from 2004-2007. He lectures at the graduate program in government at National Defense University, Jakarta; Department of International Relations at President University; and the National School for Intelligence (STIN). He has also been a guest lecture at Command and Staff Schools of the Indonesian Armed Forces (Sesko TNI); Indonesian Army (Sesko AD), Indonesian Navy (Sesko AL), and Indonesian Air Force (Sesko AU). Since 2013 he has been Chair of the Council of Strategic Analyst (DAS), a Government-based think tank.
He had been actively involved in various organizations, including the ASEAN Interparliamentary Myanmar Caucus (APIMC), Indonesia Caucus on Broadcasting, Prestasi Junior Indonesia (PJI), Association of Indonesian Political Scientists (AIPI), and the Scientific Advisory Board for Nuclear Energy (KATN). Currently, he has been active as a member of the Board of Patron at Yayasan Salafiah Kholidiyah, Tuban, member of Board of Patron at New Zealand International School (NZIS), Jakarta, a member of the East West Center Alumni Association (EWCAA), an Indonesian Councillor member for the Union Internationale de la Marionette (UNIMA), and member of Sekretariat Nasional Pewayangan Indonesia (Senawangi).
