Jakarta, November 18, 2021 — The RANA (R-Adhikarya Niche Award) Program and the Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) jointly announced the establishment of the RANA Annual Graduate Prize at CALS’ Department of Global Development for Graduate Students.

The R-Adhikarya Niche Award (RANA) is a token of appreciation and recognition for smart, innovative and competitive young students. This awards expects to help the students  pursuing their dreams to learn, explore and apply disruptive ideas, and “niche” innovative thinking, in their studies and future careers.

The competitive Award is offered annually to students at three (3) world-class US educational institutions, the East-West Center (EWC), Stanford University, and Cornell University. Students from Indonesia (or those with strong affinity to Indonesia), will be given first preference, but other students, from any country worldwide, esp. from ASEAN, and the State of Hawaii, USA, may also be considered.

Cornell Global Development confronts the most urgent and complex challenges facing people and the planet. The multidisciplinary department unites critical scholarship and practice in development studies at the intersections of agricultural, environmental, life, and social sciences. Together with its diverse network of global and community partners, Cornell Global Development delivers education with impact to advance a more equitable, sustainable, and food-secure world for all.

Cornell Global Development and the RANA Program want to catalyze change and provoke fresh understanding, “niche” thinking, and a growth-mindset in order to develop the next-generation of leaders who strive to make direct societal impact around the globe in the Era of Disruption and Super-Smart Society 5.0. RANA at Cornell University will start in 2022 and applications are now open.

The Dean of Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), Prof. Dr. Benjamin Z. Houlton, in welcoming the collaboration between Cornell Univ. and the RANA Program, pointed out: “… Our work stretches from discovery to invention, and crosscuts different disciplinary boundaries. Some of the College’s most important, life-changing, and impactful advancements have come from this approach…”

Cornell University’s President, Prof. Martha Pollack, also pointed out that: “… RANA makes a profound difference … allowing us to recruit top talent for research and scholarship and to train gifted students for productive academic career …”

The RANA Graduate Scholarship is intended to contribute to such an innovative and futuristic approach to education and professional career preparation.

The RANA Graduate Prize will be offered annually, and it will provide a minimum of US$ 10,000, with possible additional financial aid awards from Cornell Global Development for its Graduate Students (i.e., Master of Professional Studies or MPS, and Ph.D. levels). Hence, recipients of the Award will be selected by a Committee within Cornell’s Dept. of Global Development.

The Prize will provide financial assistance on a competitive basis to a selected graduate student, either at a Ph.D. or Master level, from any country. Preference will be given to those who have strong affinity to Indonesia, and those who demonstrate vision, interests, passion or experiences in pursuing a “NICHE” area(s) of study and professional career.

The RANA Program and the graduate degree fellowship at the East-West Center in Honolulu provide an award valued up to US$103,000. At Stanford University, in Stanford, California, the minimum value of the Award is US$12,500 plus possible additional financial aid from its UnderGraduate Financial Aid Program. At Cornell University, in Ithaca, New York, it provides a minimum US$10,000, with possible other Financial Aid Awards from Cornell’s Dept. of Global Development for Graduate (MPS and esp. Ph.D.) Students
