Dr. Marzuki Darusman
Marzuki Darusman
is a prominent Indonesian political figure who served as Attorney General from
1999 - 2001 and as Cabinet Secretary the following year. His early political
career began when he first became Member of Parliament in 1978 for the Golkar
Party. He served consecutive terms until 1999 and subsequently returned to
Parliament until his last term ended in 2009.
In 2008, as a
way of honoring Marzuki Darusman's extraordinary contributions to Human Rights
at the national and international level he was awarded Doctor Honoris Causa
from the University of Parahyangan, Bandung - where he had previously obtained
his law degree. At the national level, he chaired and counseled the National
Human Rights Commission (KOMNAS HAM) for a decade, while his initial
involvement at the international level was with the Inter Parliamentary Union
(IPU), followed with ASEAN Working Group on Human Rights Mechanism, and the
most recent with the United Nations Commission of Inquiry for investigating the
assassination of Benazir Bhutto. Another prestigious position that he held was
as member of the International Independent Group of Eminent Persons (IIGEP), a
special body consisting of 11 members from various countries which was
established by the President of Sri Lanka to conduct investigations on Human
Rights violations in Sri Lanka.
Presently,
Marzuki Darusman is still an active member of ASEAN Inter Parliamentarians on
Myanmar Caucus (AIPMC) for Indonesia, Parliamentarian for Global Actions (PGA)
and Chairman of Partnership for Governance Reform in Indonesia (PGRI). He was
also a member of the Executive Committee of Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) and
the Vice Chairman of the National Committee of Pacific Economic Cooperation
Conference (PECC).
